I spoke to a young man yesterday. A good kid that goes to an IFB church. He had mentioned that another person was not really married, because they had a common-law marriage.
I asked him what kind of marriage did Adam and Eve have? He stared at me blankly.
Then I asked him, how about Isaac and Rebecka? To which he answered that he believed they had a ceremony.
I pointed out that the scriptures don't say that. Isaac got off the camel went in the tent Bada Bing Bada Boom she was his wife.
Then he said something altogether amazing Jewish tradition leads me to believe they had a ceremony. (these arent exact quotes so follow along)
Unfortunately, he was working and had to go.
I really wanted to challenge him, and how he had added to scripture. Paul warns Timothy not to go beyond what was written. (1Co 4:6) I wanted to point out that Jesus frequently had corrected the traditions of the Jewish leaders of his day, using them to justify disobedience. (Matt 15:3)
Mat 16:6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Christians have to be very careful about using Jewish tradition. The most important thing is the word of God.
If we are going to worship in spirit and in truth, we have to stand upon the solid ground of Christ, and his word.
God Bless,
Robert
